Frequently asked questions

  1. Can I use sealants at any time of year?

The Pavetuf Invisible, Satin and Gloss Sealants should only be applied to dry paving and will require a dry period of weather to allow them to cure, therefore we recommend using them between Spring and Autumn.

  2. How many coats of sealant will I need to apply?

This will depend on the type of stone it is being applied to. Porous sandstone may need more coats than a denser limestone. Please note that all stone can have varying degrees of porosity. Sealants should be applied and re applied (if necessary) before the first coat has cured, applying sufficient amounts of the sealant to saturate the stone without over application, leaving sealer on the stone surface. You should test a small area before treating the entire paved area.

  3. Will the application of sealant affect the appearance of the stone?

Generally using the Invisible Sealant should not change the appearance, if you are using the Satin, Gloss or Sand Crete Sealant, then this can change / enhance the appearance. We always recommend that they are tested on a small discrete area before applying to the entire paved area.

  4. Why do I need to use generous amounts of water when applying Jointing Compound?

All stone paving is porous, thoroughly soaking the stone before and during application will help to prevent staining leaching from the Jointing Compound.

  5. How long does the Jointing Compound take to fully cure?

This will depend on the weather conditions and drainage. Whilst the Jointing Compound remains damp it will be prevented from curing, in dry conditions typical curing time is 18-24 hours. After the Jointing Compound has dried then the product is unaffected by water.

  6. Will the application of Sand Crete to my block paving affect the paving appearance?

Sand Crete can affect the appearance and should be tested on a small discrete area before applying to the fully paved area. It is also important to ensure that all excess material, debris etc, is cleaned off the paved surface, before the application of Sand Crete.

  7. Can the Jointing Compound, wet application method be used in extreme weather conditions?

The Jointing Compound is designed for use in UK weather conditions. However we would advise against using this product when the weather is extreme. The water applied to the stone not only acts as a carrier of the compound, but it also acts as a barrier, by filling all the stone pores. If applied on an extremely hot day, the stone can dry before the resin in the compound, and can actually draw in this resin, which could result in staining on the edges of the stone. In extreme cold conditions water will freeze so similar problems can occur.
